Lasting Legacy to Past MLA

written by Jean Rycroft

The Sexsmith and District Museum Society are very appreciative of the generosity of past MLA, Walter Paszkowski. When he was approached by groups and organizations wishing to express appreciation for the terrific effort expended by Walter on their behalf during his time in the Legislature, he suggested that instead of personal tokens, they may wish to donate to the Paszkowski House. The M. D. of Greenview had inquired of Walter what his personal wishes were and Walter very generously suggested that he would like to see the money go to the Museum Society for the Paszkowski House - and that was just the beginning. When the idea of a token of appreciation came up at the Chamber meeting, several organizational representatives sitting around the table very enthusiastically indicated that they would also like to be included.

The result was that the Chamber of Commerce, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Elks and Royal Purple Lodges and the Agricultural Society each contributed $500 towards the Paszkowski House. The Library Board members are going to plant lilacs, from the Paszkowski farm site, around the relocated house. Mannie Paszkowski always had beautiful lilacs, which traditionally bloomed around the house on the hill, and were a familiar sight to those of us driving past.
The Legion money will go towards a showcase for the German Naval Flag, which is a very rare symbol of their victory over an enemy. Very few museums are fortunate enough to be able to display this portion of history.

The Museum Society, in close consultation with all the donors, will add to the various displays in the Paszkowski house this summer. One of the considerations would be some showcases and we are still looking for a china cabinet. An appreciation plaque, acknowledging Walter's contribution will be placed in the home.

Walter and Marlyss graciously presented the Museum Society with a lovely old time photograph of his parents, Walter Sr. and Mannie Paszkowski. The antique framed photograph will hang in the Paszkowski house, where the Paszkowskis will still very appropriately be there to greet visitors to their old home. Walter and family have also returned Mannie's original stove to the kitchen of the home. Thank you to the Paszkowskis for their more than generous donations.    Tokens of appreciation were presented to former MLA, Walter Paszkowski at the Chamber-Elks Community Christmas Party by various community service clubs and volunteer
